The short answer
dupeGuru is a free, open-source duplicate finder with a dedicated music mode. If you clean up every kind of file on your drive, from photos to documents, dupeGuru is still a solid choice.
If you're only cleaning up a music library, the Duplicates tab in Taxonomy DJ is built for exactly that job: it compares the audio, so copies with edited tags or new cover art still get caught, it suggests a keeper by quality or folder priority, and every group always keeps at least one copy. Scanning and deleting are both free.
What dupeGuru does well
According to dupeGuru's official site and help pages:
- Free and open source (GPLv3 license), running on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- Three modes: a standard mode for any file type, a Music mode, and a Picture mode.
- Music mode matches in several ways: by filename, by the parts of a filename split at dashes (in order or in any order), by the tag fields you choose, or by contents.
- Fuzzy name matching: switch it on and similar words count as matches too.
- Reference folders: files in these folders are never deleted; they only serve as the original to compare against.
- Several ways to handle duplicates: send them to the Trash, move or copy them to another folder, or replace them with links to the original.
- Change which copy is kept, by hand or by re-prioritizing with criteria.
dupeGuru's contents scan treats two files as duplicates when their contents are exactly the same.
Where Taxonomy DJ is different
Taxonomy DJ only works with music, and it focuses on the traps that show up in music folders:
- Audio content, tag area ignored. A copy that was renamed, retitled, or given new cover art still lands in the same group as the original.
- Filenames without copy suffixes like "(1)" or "copy", while text in brackets mid-name is kept: "(Extended Mix)" and "(Radio Edit)" are two different tracks.
- Ad titles are skipped automatically. One title stamped on many different tracks doesn't merge them into one group.
- Folder priority: give each folder a number, and lower numbers are deleted first. Check Keep all for any folder that must not lose a file.
- Five ways to pick the keeper: newest, oldest, shortest name, shallowest path, or highest quality (WAV, FLAC, and AIFF before MP3; within the same type, the higher bitrate or bit depth wins).
- Only copies with the same audio are preselected for deletion. Copies that only share a name or title still show up, clearly marked as different audio, so you decide.
- A disk check right before deleting, so files you copied or deleted by hand after the scan can't cause a mistake.
- One real file is one row: symlinks and hardlinks aren't counted as two copies, and nested folders are refused with a reason.
- The Condition column marks files that won't play as Broken, so you can clear those out too.

When to keep dupeGuru
- You use Linux. Taxonomy DJ is available for Mac and Windows only.
- You're cleaning up photos, documents, or videos, not just music.
- Your music includes lots of M4A, OGG, or WMA files. Taxonomy DJ works with MP3, WAV, FLAC, and AIFF.
- You want to move or copy duplicates to another folder, or replace them with links.
- You need fuzzy name matching for a library where filenames are spelled slightly differently.
When Taxonomy DJ fits better
- Your downloads folder holds several copies of the same track with different names, different tags, or different cover art.
- You want to keep the highest-quality copy in every group without checking each group by hand.
- You're worried about deleting the wrong file: only same-audio copies are preselected, every group keeps at least one copy, and deletion goes to the Trash.
- Once the cleanup is done, you want to keep going in the same app: BPM and key detection, fake FLAC checks, tag editing, and classifying music by your own labels.
FAQ
Is dupeGuru available for Mac?
Yes. According to its official site, dupeGuru has a version for macOS 10.12 or later, alongside Windows and Linux. Taxonomy DJ has versions for Apple-chip Macs, Intel Macs (macOS 15 or later), and Windows 10 and 11.
Are both free?
Yes. dupeGuru is free and open source. The Duplicates tab in Taxonomy DJ is free on every plan, scanning and deleting alike, with no file limit.
Will copies with edited tags or new cover art slip through?
Not with Taxonomy DJ, as long as you check Audio content: the app compares only the audio and ignores the tag area. A 128 kbps and a 320 kbps copy of the same track do have different audio, though, so add Filename or Title to see them in one group, then choose the keeper yourself.
Could I accidentally delete the only copy of a track?
Taxonomy DJ guards against that: every group always keeps at least one copy, the disk is rechecked right before deleting, symlinks and hardlinks count as one file, and nested folders are refused. Choose Move to Trash and you can still get files back.
